Semantic Web technologies have been touted for their promise in being able to help organize content intelligently, increase reader engagement and automate repetitive tasks. As leaders in the field gather in San Francisco for their annual Semtech conference, Hacks/Hackers is hosting a panel of top industry figures to discuss applications of semantic technology for journalism.

The panel will include Tom Tague, OpenCalais Initiative lead for Thomson Reuters, Evan Sandhaus, Amra Tareen, CEO of Allvoices.com and Nate Weiner from The Idea Shower.

Schedule:
7pm- Drinks, snacks
730p-830p - Panel discussion
830p-9 - More discussion, networking

Attendees will be asked for a $10 donation at the door to cover costs of drinks, food and the space. (For the first time, we will be meeting at the Parisoma Innovation Loft and thank them for their support in producing the event.)

Just talked to someone about that (I'm at SemTech, Semantic Web Conference). There are a fair number of Semantic Web people who came from NLP backgrounds, but apparently there was a big split back in the 80s. Don't know much about what happened, but my guess is that a lot of the Semantic Web is more about top-down representation (figure out some taxonomies for people to use for representing info) whereas NLP is increasingly about using statistics to find patterns over a lot of noisy data.

Can someone tell me if there is a significant difference between the idea of the semantic web (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web) and natural language processing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_language_processing)? Just something I'd like to know before coming. Thanks!
